Home security from Screwfix Direct

Question: I'm concerned about people climbing into my back garden - a friend has suggested razor wire - is this legal? And what options can I have?

Firstly if you use razor wire and someone injures themself you will be liable for prosecution. THere are a number of different ways you can increase security without putting people at risk. Just think it might not be a baddie but a kid after a football!

  • Improve lighting - get those security lights which come on when someone gets into your garden.
  • Plant prickly bushes such as holly or pyacanthae - see crocus for great deals on plants around the egdes so people are deterred - a prickly bush will hurt but not maim an intruder.
  • Put good quality window locks on all downstairs windows.
  • Make sure your windows can't be popped out from the outside - some cheaper double glazed units can be popped out.
  • remove concrete paths and put gravel down - its much noisier to walk on.
  • Try a garden pond to direct people round the way you want - people don't wade through them, they walk round, and you can make sure they'll meet something else - either the right bit for a light coming on automatically or onto a gravel path.
  • Think about how you plan your garden - a simple moving of plants might reduce any hiding places near windows or doors.
  • Get some non-drying paint - and over drainpipes etc.
  • Get an alarm.
  • Get a dog!
  • Check out security stuff at Screwfix. They have a huge range.
