How to buy Furniture online - help and guidance buying online

Picking the right store is essential. You need to have an easy to use online furniture store, one which offers you a good range of furniture and gives you all the information you need when chosing a new item for your home.

Remember if you need to buy furniture for a small space you should know how small a space it is, so get the tape measure out.

Each room should have a designated use that means you use it primarily for one function. A lounge is for lounging in (watching tv and reading books), a bedroom is for sleeping, a dining room is for eating in. Knowing the function of your room gives you the main piece of furniture. Additional items can be picked after this.

Most important firstly is to get out the tape measure and work out how big your room is. Then draw out the room on some squared paper.

[ Get free graph paper here - print out a sheet or two - the 1 cm squared paper will do although the 2 mm graph paper is also good ]

Draw a scale plan of the room and mark doors and windows. Mark out to scale shapes of furniture you're keeping.

Once you have an item in mind get the measurements. The cotswold company has the measurements of all their items available. Cut out a shape in the right floor space size to match the room scale and mark it as the item and then place it on the floor plan. Where will it go? Will it fit with other items in the room. Will it block doors and windows (remember you need to get to the windows to open and close them)

Once you're satisfied that it'll fit in with other items in your room then its all steam ahead!

Is the item in the right colour for your room? Would you have to change anything else? Perhaps they have matching items available that would compliment each other. Does it need any additional accessories?

Think about the care of the item once you've bought it. Most of the furniture at cotswold company need no specialist care after you've bought it, other than standard dusting and cleaning.

Does the style match yourexisting furniture?

Once you've decided that you're ready to buy then visit the cotswold store and get a massive 20% off or 25% off if you buy two or more items.

They also have a good returns policy - If for any reason you decide not to keep an item, you can return it for a refund or replacement. Please advise them within 7 days of receipt. Non-faulty items must be returned in their original packaging and must be in an unused condition.

Picking the perfect floor for your room. Rugs at John Lewis

Are you keeping the existing floor covering or are you able to replace it?THink about what the room is use for and consider each of the following in turn.

How warm is your planned flooring? Do you like to walk about barefoot? Will you have underfloor heating? Do you have young children who'll want to play on the floor a lot? You'll need something warm, hardwearing and easy to clean.

Safety of the flooring - shiny floors and loose rugs might prove tricky for the older person. Non-slip underlays avoid rug slippage though.

Noise of the floor - will it be noisy to walk on, will you annoy the people underneath? Is there anything in your lease perhaps that restricts you having bare floorboards?

Existing floor - if you have a proper floor underneath, wooden floor boards ror parquet flooring you might want to reveal it and if necessary restore it.

Cotswold have plenty of lovely rugs and door mats as well as a good range of runners to keep your hall looking smart.

Ideas for the living Room

Are you redoing your living room or lounge?

What are you looking for? A complete rejig round and totoally new furniture or just some new accessories to bring life back.

Consider what you're after buying and whta budget you've got. Also how big is the room? Do you have space for a large sofa or should you pick a smaller settee?

Do you like occaisional tables, nested tables or would you just like a single coffee table? Think how you use your lounge.

Go through these questions in your mind to get an idea of what you're after:

  1. Do you use your lounge a lot?
  2. Do you watch lots of films so comfy reclining chairs might make watching films more cosy
  3. Do you like to curl up on the sofa and watch tv
  4. Do you like to read and have books in the lounge
  5. Do you need any new art for the walls
  6. Do you want a new clock
  7. Is the lighting right? What sort of lighting do you want? Tall standard lamps, table lamps, or candles, do you fancy strings of lights on the walls?
  8. Do you need a rug?
  9. What is the focal point of the room? Is it the tv? Is it the fireplace? Do you need to enhance the fireplace?
  10. Would you like a luxourious feel to the lounge? Try for fur rugs and throws and cushions.
  11. Can you coordinate your existing cushions or do you need more?
  12. Do you need additional storage? Would a set of boxes do, or a coffee table with storage in?
  13. Are you coordinating the wood? Do you have ash, oak, mahogony, elm or other wood in the lounge already?
Do frames match? Do mirrors tie in?
  14. Do you need magazine racks or tidies?
  15. Do you need a fire hearth set? A fireguard? Coal Skuttle? Fireplaces are becoming very trendy again and you might want to freshen up the look of your hearth
  16. Waste bin - needn't be horrid - there are some lovely ones to match other furniture.
Room Style and Design
There are lots of tv shows which show you how to change the look of rooms or your entire house. Programs such as House Doctor show you how to neutralise your home whilst programs like changing rooms show you how to do the opposite.

Whether you want to restyle a single room or the entire house you have to look at lots of issues You should think firstly about budget. This is something that will constrict and restrain you most. You need to think about which rooms you want to sort out and how much influence existing furniture is going to have. For each room you want to remodel make a plan on paper of the room to scale. This will allow you to work out the size of the furniture pieces you need. I've heard of some people mocking up furniture in old cardboard boxes to get an idea of just how much space a piece will take up.

Whilst for some this might seem a little extreme it can be useful. You'll also need to consider what style of room you're after - whether you want farmhouse look, town house style, country house class, mediterraen, internatiionally modern or eclectic or some other style perhaps based on various country's design themes.

You need to consider colour, texture, fixture and fittings, existing style of furniture you're keeping.

Once you've picked the furniture you need to consider the walls, floors, window dressings - see our web blinds page for more info on blinds - lighting, rugs, smaller items like lamps, tables, waste baskets, ornaments and everything else you'll want in your perfect new room.

So what is Farmhouse style. The image for most people which is conjured up is a kitchen with a big wooden table and either an aga or a open fire in the room. Lots of open shelves filled with bottles and plates. Floors will be slate, stone or brick, there might be wooden beams aceoss the walls and ceilings, rough walls - even brickwork perhaps and lots of natural looking materials which tie in the outside of the home with the inside.
Real wood - unvarnished and perhaps scrubbed - is an essential element in farmhouse style, no fluffy carpets here!

Town-house style is probably what we'd call appartment style these days. Top finished and quality throughout, with ensuites, stylish leather seats and a more minimalist look. Simple styling with elegant artwork displayed and different textures (faux fur is very popular at the moment)

Country House - elegance and style with a more antiques look sums up country house style. You'd possibly need big rooms with polished floors to bring this off, and even maybe a butler. Stylish less modern furniture. Optimising a room's age using period features where possible and adding them if you need to. Plaster cornicing and picture rails where ceiling height allows.

Mediterraenean style will be the strong terracotta colours on walls creating bold bright statements, plenty of tiles on the walls in the kitchen in strong bold colours, Fabrics like cotton can enhance the feel, as can white furniture. More use of outdoor space can be considered mediterean and encourgaing a merging of the two by more plants to bring the outisde in.

Internationally modern will bring in the extreme modern cutting edge styles that can seem very brave at first glance. Glass tables, chrome, furniture with its own lighting for displays, lighting such as flourescent adds the modern feel.

Eclectic can be the trickiest - putting different things together but bringing them cleverly together in a simple way. Mixing faux zebra throws with art deco lights might seem strange but can be done if you have sufficient style and planning. Personal displays of collections or things you'd love but might seem odd to others - such as excessive use of strong colors such as lilac and purple. Great opportuinity to bring in unusual rugs and lighting to add a fairytale look.

Whatever style you're after you can be sure to get some excellent quality furniture and accessories at this store. Their range is brilliant and you're bound to find the ideal pieces of furniture for your home.
